Two hundred years ago a handful of faceted sapphires was a court's luxury. Now the same mineral grows in a furnace and arrives in a padded envelope for the price of lunch. This is the log of what we ordered to build a gem tray, and what each piece actually is.

The one thing to know: a grade printed on an Amazon jewelry listing is the seller's description of a batch, not a laboratory report on your stone. Lab gems have no resale value and near-infinite supply; that is the reason you can own them. Collect for the colour and the cut, and treat D, VVS1 and "Ideal cut" as marketing until a GIA or IGI report with a matching inscription is in the box.

Moissanite studs
We are up to eight pairs of moissanite studs so far; the three listings below are the ones on the order log, and our photograph of all eight on velvet is on this page. The plain round pairs read as diamonds; the snowflake halos read as fashion.
Moissanite is silicon carbide, a lab-made stone with more fire (rainbow flash) than diamond and a hardness of 9.25. On a listing like this the D and VVS1 are the seller's grades; there is no laboratory report in the box.
Watch out
Plating over silver wears with skin contact and sweat; expect the white-gold tone to dull over months and the silver to show. Ask for the GRA card if you want any paper at all.

Stainless steel set with created (lab) sapphire and emerald per the seller. Steel over plated brass because it does not tarnish and lasts; the trade is that it cannot be resized. The stone and its colour are the point.
Created emerald is lab-grown beryl, the same mineral as mined emerald, grown by hydrothermal or flux methods; at this price it is the cheaper hydrothermal kind. Stainless steel does not tarnish and does not need plating, which is the real reason to buy steel over plated brass: the ring lasts and the stone is the point.
Watch out
Steel rings cannot be resized. Order with a ring sizer, not a guess.

Lab sapphire and lab ruby are the same mineral, corundum, grown in a furnace; chemically and in hardness (9) they are the same as mined stones. At this price they are almost certainly flame-fusion (Verneuil) material, the cheapest growth method, which is fine for a ring and not a collectable.
Watch out
Loose stones need a setting; a 6 x 8mm oval fits a standard ring mounting from any findings supplier. Colour in photographs is lit for the camera.

These are real diamonds, carbon, grown in a reactor; they test as diamond on a thermal tester and are graded on the same scale as mined stones. Melee (under about 0.2 ct) is what jewellers use for pave and halos and is sold by the millimetre, not the carat.
Watch out
D to E and VVS on melee is a batch description; no laboratory grades individual melee. For a stone over about 0.3 ct, ask whether an IGI or GIA report is included, because at that size the price difference between graded and ungraded is real.

A sorting lot: mostly small commercial-grade stones such as garnet, amethyst, citrine, peridot and topaz, in mixed sizes and cuts. The value is in learning to identify stones and in cheap accent stones, not in any single piece.
Watch out
"Natural" in a mixed parcel is the seller's word; treat any individual stone as unidentified until you test it. Grade A+ is not a recognised grading scale.

What to buy on Amazon, how to spot a good listing, and the pieces we own.
No. Moissanite is silicon carbide, its own stone, lab-made, harder than any gem except diamond and with more rainbow fire. It is sold as a diamond alternative, and it passes a basic thermal diamond tester, which is why jewellers use an electrical tester to tell them apart. Nothing on this site is sold as a diamond unless it is a lab diamond.
Are lab-grown sapphires and rubies real?
They are real corundum, the same mineral as mined sapphire and ruby, with the same hardness and chemistry. They are grown in a furnace rather than dug up, which is why they cost a small fraction of mined stones and usually show cleaner, more even colour.
What do D colour and VVS1 mean on an Amazon listing?
They are grades borrowed from the diamond scale: D is the top colourless grade, VVS1 means inclusions are very hard to see under 10x magnification. On a moissanite or melee listing they are the seller's description of a batch, not a laboratory grade of the stone you receive, unless a report from a lab like GIA or IGI is included.
Does Amazon authenticate gemstones?
No. Amazon sells what the seller lists. The protection you have is the return window, so test what arrives: a diamond tester for lab diamonds, a loupe for cut and chips, callipers for size, and a scale for carat weight.
